Roberts defeats Giants, who fall 13 games behind Dodgers 8/11/51

OTD in 1951, the Phillies’ Robin Roberts defeated the Giants to push New York 13 games back of the Dodgers. The Giants then went 37-7 as the Dodgers played .500 ball, and the teams were tied at the end of the regular season. The Giants then beat the Dodgers in a three-game playoff, climaxed by Bobby Thomson’s “shot heard ’round the world” home run.
