If baseball is \u201cfathers and sons, playing catch\u201d as it has often been suggested, it\u2019s easy to imagine Dave Bristol playing catch with his son, Lance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dave managed the Reds, Brewers, Braves, and Giants; Lance was a high-school baseball coach and is now a middle-school principal. I talked to Lance recently about Dave\u2019s induction into the Reds Hall of Fame, and the affection the two share \u2013 for each other and for baseball \u2013 is obvious.\"Bristol<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Induction Weekend was the two best days of my life,\u201d Lance said. \u201cTo see how those guys [former Reds players] still take to him, after 50 years, is amazing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he still feels the same way about them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s uncanny how they still talk and still communicate,\u201d Lance told me. \u201cThey might go a year without talking, \u00a0but they pick right back up. It says volumes about how they communicate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lance was a bat boy for the late-1960s Reds teams.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo get to be around those guys — as a kid, Rose and Bench and Helms were all so good to me — and to see them again after all these years!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was as much fun for my sister Cissy and me as anyone,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

I told Lance that the RHOF induction was long overdue for Dave.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo see him get his due, it makes us awfully proud,\u201d he said. \u201cHe appreciated being in that Hall of Fame more than any of them — I\u2019m sure of that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

When Lance coached baseball, his father was right there with him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI coached a high-school team for five years, and he was at the ballpark with us every day — every game, every practice \u2013 he took it as seriously as any big-league job he had,\u201d Lance said. \u201cWe played for the state championship, and he was just as amped-up for that as the World Series.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t give you lip-service about the game. He loves it, and I admire him so much for it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
